How to Use the CAC Payback Period Calculator
Step 1: Enter Your Customer Acquisition Cost (CAC)
Input the average amount spent to acquire one new paying customer. This includes all sales and marketing costs — salaries, ad spend, tools, events, and commissions — divided by the number of new customers acquired in the period.
Step 2: Enter Average MRR per Customer
Input the average Monthly Recurring Revenue contributed by each new customer. This is your new customer ACV divided by 12, or the average plan price for customers acquired in the period.
Step 3: Enter Your Gross Margin
Input your gross margin percentage (revenue minus cost of goods sold, divided by revenue). SaaS companies typically run 70–85% gross margins. The calculator uses this to determine how much of each dollar of MRR is available to recover the CAC.
Step 4: Read Your Payback Period
The result shows your gross-margin-adjusted payback period in months. A shorter payback means faster capital recovery and more efficient growth. The category rating compares your result to SaaS benchmarks.
Step 5: Compare Against Benchmarks
The benchmark section shows how your payback compares to six SaaS segments: Consumer SaaS, Top Quartile B2B, SMB SaaS, Median B2B SaaS, Mid-Market SaaS, and Enterprise SaaS. Green bars mean you are faster than that benchmark.
