Understanding the Math

Pythagorean Theorem Calculation

The tool uses the Pythagorean theorem to calculate dimensions:

Formula:

  • diagonal² = width² + height²
  • With aspect ratio: width = aspectRatio × height
  • Therefore: diagonal² = (aspectRatio × height)² + height²
  • Solving: height = diagonal / √(aspectRatio² + 1)

Understanding Screen Area

Why Area Matters

Same diagonal does NOT mean same screen area when aspect ratios differ!

Example: 27" diagonal

  • 16:9 format: 275.6 square inches
  • 21:9 format: 294.8 square inches (7% more area!)
