Monthly Burn Rate Calculator — Net Burn Tracker
Calculate gross and net burn rate by expense category. Enter monthly expense line items and MRR to get gross burn, net burn, cash efficiency ratio, and burn multiple — with a visual stacked breakdown showing where the money goes.
How to Use Monthly Burn Rate Calculator — Net Burn Tracker
How to Use the Monthly Burn Rate Calculator
Step 1: Enter Expense Line Items
Fill in each expense category with your monthly spend:
- Payroll & Benefits — salaries, taxes, health insurance, equity costs
- Infrastructure & Hosting — cloud, servers, CDN, databases
- Sales & Marketing — ad spend, agency fees, events, tools
- Tools & Software — SaaS subscriptions, licenses
- Professional Services — legal, accounting, contractors
- Other — miscellaneous costs
Use Add Category to add more line items, up to 10 total.
Step 2: Enter Revenue
- MRR — current monthly recurring revenue (offsets gross burn to produce net burn)
- Net New MRR — new MRR added this month (optional; enables Burn Multiple calculation)
Step 3: Read the Results
- Gross Burn — total monthly expenses before revenue
- Net Burn — gross burn minus MRR (your actual monthly cash consumption)
- Cash Efficiency — MRR divided by gross burn; shows how much revenue you generate per dollar spent
- Burn Multiple — net burn divided by net new MRR; shows how much you spend to acquire each dollar of new ARR
Step 4: Review the Expense Breakdown
The stacked bar and per-category rows show each expense as a percentage of total gross burn — sorted from largest to smallest. Use this to identify which categories dominate your cost structure.
Tips
- Burn Multiple under 1x is considered excellent by investors
- Cash Efficiency above 70% indicates a lean cost structure
- Payroll typically represents 60–80% of burn for early-stage startups
