How to Use the Startup Cash Runway Calculator
Step 1: Enter Your Cash Balance
Enter your total current bank and investment balance — this is the total cash available to fund operations.
Step 2: Enter Monthly Expenses
Enter your total monthly operating expenses including payroll, infrastructure, SaaS tools, contractors, rent, and any other recurring costs. This is your gross burn rate.
Step 3: Enter Monthly Revenue (MRR)
Enter your current Monthly Recurring Revenue. The calculator subtracts this from expenses to get your net burn rate. If you have no revenue yet, leave it at zero.
Step 4: Set MRR Growth Rate (Optional)
Enter your expected monthly MRR growth rate as a percentage. This models improving burn over time as revenue grows. Leave at zero for a conservative flat-revenue forecast.
Step 5: Read the Results
- Net Burn / Month — cash consumed each month (expenses minus revenue)
- Gross Burn / Month — total expenses before revenue offset
- Cash Runway — months until cash reaches zero at current burn rate
- Cash Zero — projected month of depletion
Step 6: Review the Runway Chart
The month-by-month chart shows projected cash balance with color coding: blue = healthy, amber = under 6 months, red = under 3 months. Use this to visualize when you need to have a raise closed or burn reduced.
Runway Status Guide
- Critical (< 3 months): Emergency action required
- Danger (3–6 months): Begin fundraising immediately
- Caution (6–12 months): Start investor conversations now
- Healthy (12+ months): Strong position for milestone-driven raises
