How to Use Churn Rate Calculator

How to Use the Churn Rate Calculator

Step 1: Select Your Period

Choose the period that matches your churn data:

  • Monthly — customers and MRR lost in a given month
  • Quarterly — customers and MRR lost in a quarter
  • Annual — customers and MRR lost over a full year

Step 2: Enter Customer Data

  • Starting Customers — the number of customers at the start of the period
  • Churned Customers — the number of customers who cancelled during the period

Step 3: Enter MRR Data

  • Starting MRR — your Monthly Recurring Revenue at the start of the period
  • Churned MRR — the MRR lost from cancellations (not including downgrades)

Step 4: Read the Results

  • Customer Churn Rate — percentage of customers lost in the period
  • Revenue Churn Rate — percentage of MRR lost in the period
  • Annual Customer Churn — period rate annualized using compound math
  • Annual Revenue Churn — period revenue rate annualized

Step 5: Review the 12-Month Projection

The projection table shows what your customer base and MRR will look like at months 1, 3, 6, 9, and 12 if current churn continues. Retention percentages are color-coded: green (>98%), blue (>95%), amber (>90%), red (<90%).

Tips

  • Use presets to benchmark against Early Stage, Growth Stage, or Best-in-Class SaaS companies
  • Revenue churn is often lower than customer churn if your churning customers are smaller accounts
  • Industry benchmark: best-in-class SaaS companies target under 5% annual customer churn
