How to Use Car Lease Calculator

How to Use Car Lease Calculator

  1. Select a Preset (Optional): Click one of the example presets (Economy Car, Mid-Size SUV, Luxury Sedan, Pickup Truck) to pre-fill realistic values and see how the calculator works.

  2. Enter Vehicle MSRP: Input the manufacturer's suggested retail price (sticker price) of the vehicle. This is used to calculate the residual value.

  3. Enter Negotiated Sale Price: Input the price you negotiated with the dealer (also called the capitalized cost). This should be less than or equal to the MSRP.

  4. Enter Residual Value (%): Input the residual value as a percentage of MSRP. This is the estimated value of the car at the end of the lease, provided by the leasing company (typically 45–60%).

  5. Enter Money Factor: Input the lease's money factor provided by the dealer (e.g., 0.00150). Multiply by 2400 to convert to an approximate APR.

  6. Select Lease Term: Choose the lease duration — 24, 36, 48, or 60 months. Most leases are 36 months.

  7. Enter Down Payment: Input your upfront cash payment (cap cost reduction). A lower down payment is often recommended for leases since it is non-recoverable if the car is totaled.

  8. Enter Sales Tax Rate: Input the applicable sales tax rate for your state or region (e.g., 7 for 7%).

  9. Click Calculate Lease: Press the button to see your monthly payment, cost breakdown, effective APR, and total lease cost.

  10. Review the Results: Check the monthly payment (before and after tax), depreciation fee, finance fee, effective APR, residual value, and total lease cost summary.

  11. Reset Anytime: Click the Reset button to clear all inputs and start a new calculation.
