How to Use GST Calculator

What is GST?

GST (Goods and Services Tax) is an indirect tax levied on the supply of goods and services in India. It replaced multiple indirect taxes like VAT, Service Tax, and Excise Duty with a unified tax system implemented on July 1, 2017.

GST Components:

  • CGST (Central GST): Central government's share (for intra-state transactions)
  • SGST (State GST): State government's share (for intra-state transactions)
  • IGST (Integrated GST): Combined tax (for inter-state transactions)

Formula: CGST + SGST = IGST (equal to total GST rate)

What is a GST Calculator?

A GST calculator helps you:

  • Add GST to a base price (exclusive → inclusive)
  • Remove GST from a final price (inclusive → exclusive)
  • Calculate CGST, SGST, and IGST components
  • Determine exact tax amounts for invoicing and accounting

How to Use This GST Calculator

Step 1: Select Calculation Mode

Choose between two modes:

Add GST (Exclusive to Inclusive)

Use this when you have a base price without GST and want to calculate the final price with GST.

Example: You sell a product for ₹10,000 (base price). With 18% GST, what is the final price?

Formula: Final Price = Base Price + (Base Price × GST Rate / 100)

Remove GST (Inclusive to Exclusive)

Use this when you have a final price with GST and want to find the original base price without GST.

Example: A bill shows ₹11,800 (including GST). What was the original price before 18% GST?

Formula: Base Price = Final Price / (1 + GST Rate / 100)

Step 2: Enter the Amount

Enter the amount in Indian Rupees (₹):

  • For Add GST mode: Enter the base price (excluding GST)
  • For Remove GST mode: Enter the final price (including GST)

Tips:

  • Use decimals for precise amounts (e.g., ₹1,234.56)
  • No need to add currency symbols—just the number

Step 3: Select GST Rate

Choose the applicable GST rate from the dropdown:

GST RateCategoryExamples
0%Exempt itemsFresh fruits, vegetables, milk, bread, newspapers
0.25%Precious stonesCut and polished diamonds, gemstones
3%Gold & SilverGold jewelry, silver articles

28%Luxury itemsAir conditioners, automobiles, cigarettes, aerated drinks
Custom RateAny other rateEnter your own GST percentage

Note: If your GST rate is not listed (e.g., 15% or 20%), select "Custom Rate" and enter the exact percentage.

Step 4: Enter Custom Rate (If Applicable)

If you selected "Custom Rate", a new field appears:

  • Enter the exact GST percentage (e.g., 15, 20, 25)
  • Supports decimals (e.g., 12.5%)

Step 5: Calculate and View Results

Click the Calculate button to see:

  1. Base Amount (excluding GST): Original price before tax
  2. GST Amount: Total tax amount
  3. GST Rate: Percentage applied
  4. Total Amount (including GST): Final price with tax
  5. CGST (Intra-state): Central GST (half of total GST)
  6. SGST (Intra-state): State GST (half of total GST)
  7. IGST (Inter-state): Integrated GST (full GST amount)

Understanding CGST/SGST vs. IGST:

  • Intra-state (within same state): Use CGST + SGST
  • Inter-state (between different states): Use IGST

GST Formulas Explained

Formula 1: Adding GST (Exclusive to Inclusive)

Given: Base Price and GST Rate Find: Total Price

Formula:

GST Amount = (Base Price × GST Rate) / 100
Total Price = Base Price + GST Amount

Example:

  • Base Price: ₹10,000
  • GST Rate: 18%
  • GST Amount: (10,000 × 18) / 100 = ₹1,800
  • Total Price: 10,000 + 1,800 = ₹11,800

Formula 2: Removing GST (Inclusive to Exclusive)

Given: Total Price (including GST) and GST Rate Find: Base Price and GST Amount

Formula:

Base Price = Total Price / (1 + GST Rate / 100)
GST Amount = Total Price - Base Price

Alternative formula:

Base Price = (Total Price × 100) / (100 + GST Rate)

Example:

  • Total Price: ₹11,800
  • GST Rate: 18%
  • Base Price: 11,800 / 1.18 = ₹10,000
  • GST Amount: 11,800 - 10,000 = ₹1,800

CGST and SGST Calculation (Intra-State)

Formula:

CGST = GST Amount / 2
SGST = GST Amount / 2
CGST Rate = GST Rate / 2
SGST Rate = GST Rate / 2

Example:

  • GST Amount: ₹1,800
  • GST Rate: 18%
  • CGST: ₹900 (9%)
  • SGST: ₹900 (9%)

IGST Calculation (Inter-State)

Formula:

IGST = GST Amount
IGST Rate = GST Rate

Example:

  • GST Amount: ₹1,800
  • IGST: ₹1,800 (18%)

Tips for Businesses

Invoicing Best Practices

Include on GST Invoice:

  1. GSTIN (GST Identification Number) - yours and customer's
  2. Invoice number and date
  3. Base amount (before GST)
  4. GST rate and amount (CGST/SGST or IGST)
  5. Total amount (including GST)
  6. HSN/SAC code (product/service classification)

Example Invoice:

Product: Laptop
Base Price: ₹50,000
CGST (9%): ₹4,500
SGST (9%): ₹4,500
Total: ₹59,000

When to Charge CGST/SGST vs. IGST

Intra-State (within same state):

  • Charge CGST + SGST
  • Example: Seller in Maharashtra → Buyer in Maharashtra

Inter-State (different states):

  • Charge IGST
  • Example: Seller in Maharashtra → Buyer in Karnataka

Special Cases:

  • Union Territories: May use UTGST instead of SGST
  • Exports: 0% GST (with Input Tax Credit refund)
  • Imports: IGST + customs duty

GST Return Filing

Use this calculator to:

  • Calculate total GST collected (output tax)
  • Verify GST paid on purchases (input tax credit)
  • Reconcile amounts before filing GSTR-1 (sales) and GSTR-3B (summary)

Tip: Keep records of all invoices with GST breakdowns for audits.

Troubleshooting

Result Doesn't Match My Invoice

Possible causes:

  1. Wrong mode selected: Use "Add GST" for base price → final price, "Remove GST" for final price → base price
  2. Incorrect GST rate: Double-check the rate applicable to your product/service
  3. Rounding differences: Some systems round at different stages

Solution: Verify the GST rate from official GST portal or your tax consultant.

CGST + SGST ≠ Total GST Amount

Cause: Rounding errors with decimals.

Example:

  • GST Amount: ₹1,000.01
  • CGST: ₹500.00 (rounded down)
  • SGST: ₹500.01 (rounded up)
  • Total: ₹1,000.01 ✅

Solution: This is normal. The calculator displays exact values (2 decimal places).

Custom GST Rate Field Not Showing

Cause: You haven't selected "Custom Rate" from the GST Rate dropdown.

Solution: Select "Custom Rate" from the dropdown, then enter your percentage in the new field.

GST Compliance and Legal Notes

GST Registration Threshold

Mandatory GST registration if:

  • Annual turnover > ₹40 lakh (goods)
  • Annual turnover > ₹20 lakh (services)
  • E-commerce sellers (mandatory regardless of turnover)
  • Inter-state supply (mandatory regardless of turnover)

Special states (Northeast, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand):

  • Threshold: ₹20 lakh (goods), ₹10 lakh (services)

Input Tax Credit (ITC)

What is ITC? Tax paid on purchases (input) can be claimed as credit against tax collected on sales (output).

Formula:

Net GST Payable = Output Tax - Input Tax Credit

Example:

  • You sold goods for ₹1,00,000 + 18% GST = ₹18,000 (output tax)
  • You purchased raw materials for ₹50,000 + 18% GST = ₹9,000 (input tax)
  • Net GST payable: 18,000 - 9,000 = ₹9,000

Use this calculator to verify GST amounts on purchase invoices for ITC claims.

Reverse Charge Mechanism (RCM)

In some cases, the buyer pays GST instead of the seller:

  • Services from unregistered suppliers
  • Imports of services
  • Specific notified goods/services

For RCM calculations: Use "Add GST" mode with the service amount as base price.

Composition Scheme

Small businesses (turnover < ₹1.5 crore) can opt for composition scheme:

  • Fixed GST rates: 1% (traders), 5% (restaurants), 6% (manufacturers)
  • Cannot claim input tax credit
  • Cannot make inter-state sales

For composition scheme: Use "Custom Rate" and enter your applicable rate (1%, 5%, or 6%).
