How to Use Sitemap Validator

How to Use Sitemap Validator

Step 1: Paste Your Sitemap XML

Copy the contents of your sitemap.xml file and paste it into the input field. You can also use one of the built-in examples to explore the tool.

Step 2: Click Validate Sitemap

Press the Validate Sitemap button to run validation. The tool checks:

  • XML well-formedness
  • Root element (<urlset> or <sitemapindex>)
  • Namespace declaration (xmlns)
  • Required fields per entry (<loc> for each <url> or <sitemap>)
  • <changefreq> values against the allowed set
  • <priority> values in the 0.0–1.0 range
  • URL count against the 50,000-per-file spec limit

Step 3: Review Results

Field Checks — confirms which fields are present or missing.

Errors — issues that make the sitemap invalid (missing <loc>, invalid priority, etc.).

Warnings — non-blocking recommendations (missing <lastmod>, etc.).

URL / Sitemap Entries Preview — shows the first 10 entries with their field values and any per-entry issues.

Sitemap Types

  • URL Sitemap<urlset> root; lists individual page URLs
  • Sitemap Index<sitemapindex> root; lists child sitemap files

Tips

  • Always include <lastmod> — it helps search engines prioritise crawling
  • Keep individual sitemaps under 50,000 URLs and under 50 MB uncompressed
  • Use a sitemap index to split large sites across multiple files
  • Submit your sitemap URL to Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools
