How to Use the PromQL Query Builder
Step 1: Enter a Metric Name
Type the Prometheus metric you want to query, such as http_requests_total or node_cpu_seconds_total.
Step 2: Add Label Matchers
Add one or more label matchers (job="api", status=~"5..") to narrow the query. Choose between exact match (=), negative match (!=), and regex match (=~/!~) operators.
Step 3: Choose an Aggregation
Pick an aggregation function (sum, avg, max, topk, etc.) and optionally group results by or without specific labels. topk/bottomk take a count parameter instead of a group clause.
Step 4: Set a Range Duration
Choose the range window (1m, 5m, 1h, etc.) used by the generated rate() and increase() variants.
Step 5: Copy the Query
Copy the instant vector query for current values, the rate() query for per-second averages on dashboards, or the increase() query for totals over the window — useful in alerting rules.
