How to Use Makefile Target Generator — Scaffold, Validate, and Self-Document Makefiles

How to Use the Makefile Target Generator

Step 1: Define a Target

Enter a target name (e.g. build), any dependencies as a comma-separated list (e.g. install), and the shell commands to run, one per line.

Step 2: Mark Targets as Phony

Leave "Add to .PHONY" checked for targets that do not produce a file matching their name (like build, test, clean) — this is the standard Make convention to avoid conflicts with files of the same name.

Step 3: Add More Targets

Click "Add Target" to define additional targets. Reference earlier target names in a later target's dependencies to chain them together (e.g. build depending on install).

Step 4: Copy or Download

Copy the generated Makefile or download it directly — commands are automatically indented with a real tab character, since Make requires tabs (not spaces) before each recipe line.
