Frequently Asked Questions
API Detective is not capturing any requests. What do I do?
Make sure the side panel is open before navigating to the page. API Detective uses Chrome's DevTools Protocol and must be active when requests fire. Try refreshing the page after opening the panel.
Why are some requests missing from the list?
Requests that complete before the panel is fully opened may not appear. Also, requests made by service workers or browser extensions other than API Detective may not be captured depending on your Chrome version.
How do I open the side panel?
Click the API Detective icon in your Chrome toolbar. The side panel will open on the right side of your browser window. You can also open it from the Extensions menu (puzzle icon) in Chrome.
What types of requests does API Detective detect?
API Detective automatically classifies REST API calls, GraphQL queries and mutations, WebSocket connections, JSON responses, and auth-related endpoints (OAuth, token endpoints).
How do I export to Postman?
This is a Pro feature. After capturing requests, click the "Export" button and choose "Postman Collection". The exported .json file can be imported directly into Postman via File → Import.
How do I export to OpenAPI?
This is a Pro feature. Click "Export" and choose "OpenAPI Spec". API Detective generates an OpenAPI 3.0 YAML file from the captured endpoints. You can then import it into tools like Swagger UI or Postman.
I purchased Pro but my features are not unlocked. What do I do?
Make sure you are signed in with the same email address used during purchase. Try signing out and signing back in. If the issue persists, contact us with your purchase receipt and we will resolve it manually.
Does API Detective work on all websites?
API Detective works on most websites. However, Chrome restricts extension access on certain pages such as chrome:// URLs, the Chrome Web Store, and some enterprise-managed pages.
Is my browsing data sent to your servers?
No. All API capture and processing happens locally in your browser. The content of requests and responses never leaves your device. Only your account email (for Pro sign-in) is stored — see our Privacy Policy for details.
Can I get a refund?
The Pro license is non-refundable except where required by applicable consumer protection law. If you have a specific issue, please contact us and we will do our best to help.
Still need help?
Email us with a description of the issue, your Chrome version, and any steps to reproduce it. We aim to respond within 2 business days.
