How to Use XPath Validator

How to Use the XPath Validator:

  1. Enter an XPath Expression: Type or paste your XPath expression into the top input field. Press Enter or click "Validate" to check it.

  2. Validate Only: Click "Validate" with the XML field empty to check whether the expression is syntactically valid. A green banner confirms a valid expression; a red banner shows the error message.

  3. Evaluate Against XML: Paste your XML document into the XML field, then click "Validate & Evaluate". The tool parses the XML, runs the XPath, and shows the matched nodes, a scalar value (string/number/boolean), or an error if the XML is malformed.

  4. Read the Results: For node-set results, each matched node is shown with its tag name, attributes, and text content (up to 50 matches). For count(), string(), or boolean() expressions, the scalar value is shown directly.

  5. Expression Analysis: After a successful validation the Expression Analysis panel shows character count, path depth (number of / steps), predicate count, function calls, and explicit axis specifiers.

  6. Use Examples: Click the example buttons to load common XPath patterns with matching XML instantly.

Supported features:

  • All XPath 1.0 axes: child, parent, ancestor, descendant, following-sibling, etc.
  • Predicates: [@attr], [position()], [contains()], [last()]
  • Functions: count(), string(), boolean(), contains(), starts-with(), normalize-space(), etc.
  • Wildcards: , @, node(), text()
  • Abbreviated and full axis syntax
