How to Use security.txt Generator — Create and Validate RFC 9116 Disclosure Files

How to Use the Security.txt Generator:

  1. Choose a Preset (optional): Start with Minimal (required fields only), Standard (contact + policy + acknowledgments), or Full (all RFC 9116 directives) to pre-fill the form.

  2. Contact (required): Add at least one contact address where security researchers should report vulnerabilities. This can be a mailto: email address or an https:// URL pointing to a report form. Click "Add contact" to include multiple channels.

  3. Expires (required): Set the date after which this file should be considered stale. RFC 9116 mandates an expiry date — renew it at least annually. The tool formats it in ISO 8601 (e.g., 2026-12-31T23:59:00.000Z).

  4. Policy: Link to your Vulnerability Disclosure Policy (VDP) or bug bounty policy page. This tells researchers the rules of engagement.

  5. Encryption: Provide a URL to your PGP public key so researchers can encrypt sensitive vulnerability reports before sending them to your contact email.

  6. Acknowledgments: Link to a hall-of-fame or thanks page that credits researchers who have responsibly disclosed vulnerabilities.

  7. Preferred-Languages: List BCP 47 language tags (e.g., en, fr, de) to indicate which languages you can receive reports in.

  8. Canonical: Set the canonical URL where this file is hosted. Useful if the same organization runs multiple domains.

  9. Copy / Download: Click "Copy" to copy the generated content or "Download" to save it as security.txt. Deploy it at https://yourdomain.com/.well-known/security.txt served over HTTPS.
