How to Use Pomodoro Timer

How to Use the Pomodoro Timer

What is the Pomodoro Technique?

The Pomodoro Technique is a time management method developed by Francesco Cirillo in the late 1980s. It uses a timer to break work into focused intervals (traditionally 25 minutes) separated by short breaks. Each interval is called a "Pomodoro" (Italian for tomato, named after the tomato-shaped kitchen timer Cirillo used).

Getting Started

Our Pomodoro Timer helps you implement this proven productivity technique with customizable intervals, automatic break scheduling, and session tracking.

Step-by-Step Instructions

Basic Pomodoro Workflow

  1. Start a Work Session

    • Click the "Start" button to begin your first Pomodoro
    • The timer displays your remaining work time (default: 25 minutes)
    • Timer updates every second in large, easy-to-read format
    • Work with full focus until the timer completes
  2. Work Session Completes

    • Audio alert plays when time is up
    • Notification shows on screen
    • Timer automatically switches to break mode
    • Your completed session is recorded
  3. Take a Short Break

    • Short break timer starts automatically (default: 5 minutes)
    • Use this time to rest, stretch, or grab water
    • Stay away from work-related activities
    • Timer alerts you when break is over
  4. Continue the Cycle

    • After break, timer switches back to work mode
    • Continue completing Pomodoros
    • Session counter tracks your progress
    • Visual indicators show completed sessions
  5. Long Break Time

    • After 4 completed work sessions, take a long break
    • Long break timer starts automatically (default: 15 minutes)
    • Use this for a meal, walk, or complete mental reset
    • Cycle restarts after long break
