How to Use ESLint Config Generator — Professional Code Quality & Linting Rules

How to Use the ESLint Config Generator:

  1. Choose Your Language: Select JavaScript for plain JS projects or TypeScript for TypeScript projects. Selecting TypeScript automatically adds @typescript-eslint/parser as the parser and plugin:@typescript-eslint/recommended to the extends list — catching type-related mistakes that plain ESLint cannot detect.

  2. Select the Environment: Pick Browser if your code runs in the browser (adds window, document, and other browser globals). Choose Node.js for backend or CLI projects (adds process, require, __dirname, and other Node.js globals). Select Browser + Node for fullstack code, monorepos, or universal libraries that run in both environments.

  3. Pick a Style Guide: Airbnb is the most widely adopted — comprehensive and strict, great for teams. Standard uses no semicolons and fewer peer packages, popular in open-source Node.js projects. Google follows Google's JavaScript style guide and is slightly less strict than Airbnb. None gives you only eslint:recommended as a minimal baseline to extend manually.

  4. Toggle React Support: Enable this if your project uses React. It adds plugin:react/recommended (component best practices) and plugin:react-hooks/recommended (rules of hooks). Also sets react/react-in-jsx-scope to off so you do not need to import React in every JSX file (React 17+).

  5. Toggle Prettier Support: Enable this if you use Prettier alongside ESLint. It adds eslint-config-prettier to disable all ESLint formatting rules that conflict with Prettier, and adds the prettier/prettier rule to report formatting violations as ESLint errors. Without this, ESLint and Prettier will conflict on indentation and trailing commas.

  6. Copy the Config: The .eslintrc.json is generated instantly as you change any option. Click Copy to copy it to your clipboard or Download to save it directly as .eslintrc.json. Place this file in the root directory of your project.

  7. Run the Install Command: Copy the install command shown below the config and run it in your project directory. It lists every npm package required for your chosen combination of language, style guide, and options.

Common Use Cases:

  • React + TypeScript app: Select TypeScript, Browser, Airbnb, enable React. Run the install command, place the config in the project root, then run npx eslint . --ext .ts,.tsx to start linting.
  • Node.js API (TypeScript): Select TypeScript, Node.js, Airbnb (React off). Covers import ordering, TypeScript strictness, and consistent naming across your backend.
  • Open-source Node.js package: Select JavaScript, Node.js, Standard. Standard is widely used in the Node.js open-source community and requires minimal peer dependencies.
  • Fullstack Next.js project: Select TypeScript, Browser + Node, Airbnb, enable React. Next.js runs code on both server and client, so both sets of environment globals are needed.
  • Quick personal project: Select JavaScript, Browser, None. You get only eslint:recommended — catches real errors without enforcing an opinionated style.

Tips:

  • Add "lint": "eslint . --ext .js,.ts,.jsx,.tsx" to your package.json scripts so you can run npm run lint from any directory.
  • Use // eslint-disable-next-line rule-name above a line to suppress a specific rule without disabling it globally.
  • For TypeScript configs, make sure tsconfig.json is at the project root — the parserOptions.project path must resolve correctly or type-aware rules will fail with a parse error.
  • If you use Vite, Create React App, or Next.js, check whether they ship their own ESLint config — you may want to extend it rather than replace it.
