How to Use CSS Grid Generator — Visual Layout Builder & Code Exporter

How to Use the CSS Grid Layout Generator

Step 1: Choose a Preset or Start from Scratch

Select a preset to load a common layout pattern:

  • Equal 3-Column — three equal-width columns side by side
  • Holy Grail — classic header / nav / main / aside / footer layout
  • 2-Column Blog — wide content column with a narrower sidebar
  • 4-Column Cards — four equal card columns
  • Full Page — single column with header, main, and footer rows

Step 2: Set Columns and Rows

Use the + and − buttons to set the number of columns (1–6) and rows (1–6). Edit the size strings directly to use any valid CSS values:

  • fr — fractional unit (e.g. 1fr 2fr 1fr)
  • px / rem — fixed sizes (e.g. 200px 1fr)
  • auto — size to content
  • repeat() — shorthand (e.g. repeat(4, 1fr))
  • minmax() — responsive ranges (e.g. minmax(200px, 1fr))

Step 3: Set Gap

Enter column-gap and row-gap values in pixels. Equal values generate a shorthand gap property.

Step 4: Enable Named Areas (Optional)

Toggle Named Grid Areas to display a cell editor matching your column × row count. Type area names in each cell — cells sharing a name automatically span that area. Leave cells blank for anonymous placement.

Step 5: Copy the CSS

The Generated CSS panel updates live. Click Copy CSS to copy the full code including grid-area declarations for each named area.
