How to Use the Character Encoding Converter
Step 1: Paste Your Text
Enter or paste the text you want to convert into the input field.
Step 2: Select Source and Target Encodings
Choose the encoding your text currently uses (Source) and the encoding you want to convert it to (Target):
- UTF-8 — Universal encoding supporting all Unicode characters
- Latin-1 (ISO-8859-1) — Western European characters (0x00–0xFF)
- Windows-1252 — Windows legacy encoding, superset of Latin-1 with extra symbols (€, smart quotes, etc.)
- ASCII — 7-bit encoding, only supports the first 128 characters
Step 3: View Results
- Converted Text — the text as it appears in the target encoding (unmappable characters are replaced with
?) - Lost Characters — a warning banner shows how many characters could not be mapped
- Hex Byte Views — the raw byte representation for both source and target encodings
Step 4: Copy
Use Copy Converted Text to copy the result, or Copy Hex Bytes to copy the raw bytes.
Tips
- Use examples to quickly test common problem characters like accented letters and the € symbol
- If you see
?in the output, those characters cannot be represented in the target encoding - UTF-8 → ASCII will lose any non-English character
- Windows-1252 covers more characters than Latin-1 (€, smart quotes, em dashes, etc.)
