How to Use CBOR Inspector — Parse Hex Streams and Decode Binary Object Primitives

How to Use the CBOR Data Inspector

Step 1: Paste Your CBOR Data

Paste hex-encoded or base64-encoded CBOR bytes into the input panel. The tool accepts:

  • Hex with spaces: a3 64 6e 61 6d 65 65 41 6c 69 63 65
  • Hex compact: a3646e616d656541 6c6963 65
  • Hex with 0x prefix: 0xa3 0x64 0x6e 0x61
  • Base64: o2RuYW1lZUFsaWNl

Use the Format toggle to force a specific encoding or leave it on Auto to let the tool detect it.

Step 2: Inspect the Output

Two tabs are available:

JSON Output

The decoded CBOR value as pretty-printed JSON. Byte strings appear as h' notation (e.g. "h'deadbeef'").

Bytes View

A token-by-token breakdown showing:

ColumnDescription
OffsetByte position of this token in hex
HeaderThe CBOR header bytes (initial byte + length bytes)
TypeCBOR major type: uint, nint, bstr, tstr, array, map, float32, true, false, null, tag:…
ValueDecoded value or structure descriptor

Nested items are indented with markers to show map keys and array elements.

Common Use Cases

  • WebAuthn debugging: Decode authData, attStmt, and attestation objects from navigator.credentials.create() responses
  • IoT payloads: Inspect CBOR-encoded sensor readings from CoAP or MQTT streams
  • COSE messages: Decode signed/encrypted CBOR Object Signing and Encryption messages
  • CBOR-LD: Inspect JSON-LD documents encoded as CBOR
