How to Use Canonical URL Checker — Duplicate Content & Indexing Tag Audit

How to Use the Canonical URL Format Validator

Step 1: Enter Your Canonical URL

Paste the URL you intend to use in a <link rel="canonical" href="…"> tag into the input field. Analysis runs instantly as you type — no button to click.

Step 2: Read the Results

Each check displays one of four statuses:

  • ✓ Pass (green) — The URL passes this check. No action needed.
  • ✗ Fail (red) — A critical error that will cause search engines to ignore or reject your canonical. Must be fixed.
  • ⚠ Warning (amber) — A potential problem that may cause duplicate-content issues or inconsistent canonicalization. Should be fixed.
  • ℹ Info (blue) — Informational note about the URL structure. No action required, but worth being aware of.

Step 3: Apply the Suggested Fixes

For every failed or warning check, the tool shows a suggested corrected URL. Copy it and update your <link rel="canonical"> tag accordingly.

Checks Performed

CheckWhy It Matters
Absolute URLRelative URLs in canonical tags are technically allowed but widely mishandled by CMS plugins and crawlers. Always use absolute URLs.
HTTPS protocolSearch engines prefer HTTPS. HTTP canonicals on HTTPS sites are often ignored.
No query parametersParameters like ?utm_source= or ?ref= create separate pages for search engines. Strip them from canonicals.
No URL fragmentFragments (#section) are stripped by browsers before the request is sent. Canonicals with fragments are ineffective.
No default portExplicit :80 or :443 creates technically distinct URLs that may not be treated as equivalent.
Lowercase hostnameHostnames are case-insensitive but inconsistent casing produces duplicate-URL signals.
Lowercase pathPaths are case-sensitive on most servers. /Page and /page are different URLs.
No double slashesConsecutive slashes (//) in a path create duplicate URLs if the server does not redirect them.
Trailing slashInformational: ensure one version consistently redirects to the other.
