How to Use the Base32 Encoder/Decoder
Step 1: Choose Encode or Decode
Select Encode to convert plain text into Base32, or Decode to convert a Base32 string back into text.
Step 2: Enter Your Input
- Encode mode — type or paste any text, including emoji and non-ASCII characters
- Decode mode — paste a Base32 string (e.g.
MZXW6YTBOI======). Padding characters, whitespace, and lowercase letters are handled automatically
Step 3: Toggle Padding (Encode Only)
By default, output is padded with = characters to a multiple of 8, per RFC 4648. Many systems — including TOTP authenticator secrets — omit padding. Toggle the Padding button off to produce unpadded output.
Step 4: Convert and Copy
Click Convert to run the transformation, then Copy Output to copy the result. Use Swap to flip the mode and continue working with the output as new input.

Base32 is less compact than Base64 (8 output characters per 5 input bytes vs. 4 per 3) but is easier to read aloud and type manually — which is why it is the standard for authenticator app secrets.
